I’m writing this post because I’m getting more and more comments about my lack of posting here.
Apologies to all 5 of my readers
for not posting anything recently.
Here’s the dealio on what’s happening with me and what’s in store for future site direction, and updates.
PERSONAL…
I lost 50 pounds training for the Boston Marathon and have been on a health kick ever since. I also decided to get my handsome self “out there” into the dating realm since I believe I need a more balanced life. I work 2 other IT-related jobs which I can’t bring myself to quit despite not needing that income, because I like what I do there (helping people and being exposed to new technologies SQL stuff, VMWARE, server stuff, routers, firewalls etc…)

I’m in best shape of my life now, at 40 years old, and the dating is going well, in case you’re wondering
END Personal stuff
BEGIN: Site and SEO stuff
Firstly, running a legit review site is something I take seriously, and while most people will tend to think of me as an authority on link building the facts are:
SEO is ever-changing, some types of links and link building methods don’t work anymore the way they used to. In order for me to be someone you can rely on for VALID reviews, I need to keep my SEO knowledge-base up to snuff, so if I’m blasting links out all day long without revisiting and upgrading my seo skillset, without dissecting the Pandalization of some of my sites that got hit, then you are NOT well-served by me nor the reviews since they’re “suspect”, in my opinion anyway
The services being reviewed- some of the services I reviewed have added new functions, features, upgrades etc… which means they need to be revisited, re-tested in order to not have stale reviews on site (an example would be “Hey Dan XYZ service just added instant link wheels creation to their features set and they didn’t have this when you reviewed them X months ago”).
Site structures- people talk about building SEO-friendly site structure, architecture, plugins etc… In many ways, SEO has gotten simpler and also more complicated post-Panda.
For example, there’s schools of thought that deem social signals and social presence as being a key to stickier, better rankings. My thoughts on this are; if you put a little extra effort into making your sites, whether they’re mini-sites, macro-sites or whatever… into looking like legitimate fleshed-out sites, then go ahead and put that extra effort into “hedging your bets” SEO-wise, and leave nothing to chance, maybe even get the Facebook Fan page set up for each website you own, plus get a dedicated Twitter account, get links from relevant sites, find guest blogging opportunities using manual methods, all the while using whatever services do the trick for you now.
Different viewpoints… Recently I hired some SEO guys to work on a site for me and it’s like sacrilege to me to do that because I always believed they charge way too much, but I now value my time more than my income, and you should too so I decided to see what the real “pros” do and how they think all the while keeping stuff I don’t have time to do outsourced to others from whom I can learn new things. Point being… they claim SEO is made over-complicated by SEO bloggers and forum dweebs looking for attention, while they’re Private Sector types who don’t get paid unless they see results for clients, and they deem site structure as unimportant so they’re not theorists at heart and deserve to be listened to.
So when it comes to stuff like this, I am open to all parties’ knowledge and am gleaning from that and from them and applying that knowledge to me and to the types of sites you, my 5 readers, might be building
REVIEWS- I’m in the process of “locking down” what I see as properly built websites, pre-destined for favorable rankings, which goes back to site building, site structures, what’s needed, what’s not, keyword density factors, OBLs, conversions, etc… Once I have this down pat, then I feel like my tests and reviews will be more worthy of your trust.
I’ve also decided that I won’t post any reviews until the testing is at least halfway to completely done (1 1/2-3 months of testings). This means there will be less posting by me, but more valid reviews and tests, and it saves both you and me time. When I review something but don’t come to a conclusion on it in the review, people tend to go out and get the service anyway and I feel partially responsible for that, which is why I’m going to be less of an attention whore by posting less, but better content for you.
There’s 5-6 Services currently being tested, with reviews coming out soon…
I will also be busy revamping old sites, and building new ones mostly for testing purposes… if they make money for me that’s great, but I really just like building sites and seeing how they react to the SEO done to them. My aversion to “needing” these sites to make money is due to the fact that I don’t want the observer (me) to affect the experiments too much.
That’s Psych 101 stuff right there, “the observer always manages to affect the outcome of the experiments”.
Statistics 101 also taught me that there’s loopholes and flaws in most tests and the methodology behind tests, and this is even more of an issue when it comes to applying tests and experiments to the ever-changing SEO landscape, which DOES changes all the time, but with the core SEO concepts never really changing.
Hang tight, I’ll be posting again within the next 2 weeks. Sometimes less is more
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
First, congratulations on your tremendous physical accomplishments! Second, I’ve always respected your honesty and this post and the underlying process you are going through is no different. Times have clearly changed and focusing on the foundational principles that many of us started with continue to pay dividends while those once easy supplemental money making options have vanished. It is great to make the journey together.
Thanks Dan, the best high in life.. the thing that does more for you as a person is health, physical and emotional. Running has been a good high, improving overall energy levels has led to healthier emotional state, not that I was a psycho-manic-depressive or anything before, but you’ll never know how happy you can be and SEEM unless you’re operating at optimal health.
I’m so jazzed about the whole health kick that I feel like blogging about that on here, too
Anyhow, thanks for the comment and the welcome back,
Dan
Looks like you need to update your gravatar after all that weight loss. Congrats Daniel. And I’m sure you have more like 5,000 readers than 5. I was very glad to see a fresh post here, as I come back every week to see if there is anything new, so thanks for the nice surprise. Your reviews have always been very insightful and refreshing to me, but you are right… a lot has changed in the SEO world and I am working on locking down my sites as well. Good to see you back and good luck with everything.
Haha! I did that after reading your comment and gravatar seems to be slow updating the new pic I uploaded, oh well.
I have some non-SEO but site-related stuff I’m going ot share as well. I’ve also been thinking about trying to help people make more money using certain methods, whether it be Adsense, CPA, etc…but it might prove too much for me to handle and I’m just trying to lead a simple happy life which means not biting off more than I can chew. there was a time when I’d rather be blogging about seo and link building than hitting the town, and nowadays it seems like this site and my 5 readers are jealous mistresses
kinda like rental properties.
Thanks for the feedback and the welcome back,
Dan
Good to see an update from you Daniel. Always interested in your thoughts, theories, methodologies. Looking forward to your future posts and reviews.
Andy, thanks man… there will be a lot of the methodologies and what-not in the reviews so as to avoid making dedicate posts that lead to forum like discussion about SEO, which everyone and their mother seem to disagree about. I’m open to different viewpoints, like this post mentioned, but my goal is just to keep the reviews legit, which means making sure the core of the sites are strong and pre-destined to be receptive to links that should work…
So yea, there’ll be some seo knowledge “dropped” along the way and I hope it’s good stuff
Dan
Dan, great to see you back. Looking forward to more of that (all too rare) objective testing.
Thanks Sherwood, appreciate it!
Dan
You look much younger and fit to be on 40′s… the taller guy is your grandpa ye?
Welcome back
Ha ha, pretty funny, better than being asked, “who’s the guy wearing a wool sweater at the beach!?”
Looks like I have 6 readers now, yippee!
Thanks for the welcome back,
Dan
Hey Dan – You’re alive! I’ve been wondering
Welcome back. Guess I’m reader #5!
Hello there dear reader #5!
I’m alive and well and killing it on all fronts.
New ride, new crib, new wardrobe, new life practically, and complacency sucks, be warned!
More Psych 101 stuff… hierarchy of needs, achieving and/or striving for self-actualization/one’s utmost potential is key to happiness, in my twisted skulls anyways…
Thanks,
Dan
Dan-
Glad you had a wonderful summer!
So much going on in the world of SEO post Panda. I am hopeful that through you and others who participate on this site, we will all be able to learn some new ideas.
Welcome back my friend.
Sincerely
D.D.
Thanks Dan the Man 2.0,looking forward to getting together with you on Skype soon,
Dan
Hey Dan,
Welcome back from the dead! Seriously, I literally thought you died.
Anyways, people are still stump about post-panda, and what google really wants and whatnot, blahblahblah or so from what I read.
For me though, nothing has changed a bit. It’s still all about good backlinks… and good contents.
I would say after the lastest update, what is it now? 2.4? Probably see stronger results with linking building services. BMR is stilling ranking the top and probably even better now.
I noticed google can detect unnatural linking patterns better than before. After I decided to drop BLS about a month ago to try other services, and the backlinking stop for about 40 of my sites, they all got penalized/sandbox or whatever its called a week later post-panda. So, this is a good time for me to try out one of Matt Leclear’s service in the WF for a guarantee first page on a penalized site.
Hi Elbert, thanks. Your comment raised a point I didn’t address much in this post, but alluded to… are we over complicating SEO, us bloggers and forum dweebs? (not you Elbert).
I’ll be watching myself carefully to not delve into minutiae that doesn’t really address core SEO and site building stuff, I hope.
Regarding Leclear’s service, I ordered one or two of them, never received anything at all, I even responded to the WSO thread, plus I called the paypal business number and the phone numbers on his WSO, all of them that he posted, several times, and never a single thing back from him, so I’d be wary of that ninja linking dude, despite all the testimonials.
Why would anyone rank your main kw for a one time fee, or tiny recurring fee is beyond me, unless they’re offering this up as a lead-loss service to steal people’s niches and money keywords, lol. I’m not saying he’s doing that but Pro SEOs charge 2-40k/month for their services and don’t really spend time slumming in forums offering up WSOs.
Anyhow, thanks and welcome back to you as well,
Dan
In my opinion, I do believe we are over-complicating SEO than it should especially post-panda. I still believe it’s still off-page rather than on-page.
Hmm, are we talking about the same Leclear? I just made an order and already receive a ticket on my campaign. Regardless, going to try this out on a penalized site. If the site get their rankings back, great, if not… then I got a bone to pick with someone.
On-page is more important now, actually but only goes so far. It’s more important to not have BAD on-page SEO like keyword stuffing than it is to have minutiae-driven proper optimization. In other words, just make sure things like keyword density aren’t hurting your content, backlinks are what get people to higher spots though.
However, domain and site authority play a key role as well, which is why we see Yelp outranking some businesses home pages…
Yes, probably the same Leclear who was running the WSO.
Elbert please email me privately if you have any future updates on this, as I don’t want to give undue attention to someone I’ve had bad experiences with, even if you have a good experience with his service.
Thanks bud,
Dan
I’ll keep you updated.
Hello, congrats on the weight loss. Fantastic sir. Looking forward to your next blog post.
Thanks Andrew
Glad to see you back. I check every couple of days and I so happy to see you posted something new!
Hey Sean, welcome back to you, too!
Now that backlinking, site building and overall SEO are on my mind again in a prominent way the updates will be more frequent.
Thanks,
Dan
Hey Dan,
I’ve always been very interested to hear what you have to say, so glad to get an update from you and look forward to seeing your reviews to come.
Glad also to hear you’re personal life is on fire right now. They say life is what happens whilst you’re making other plans, and its great that you’ve managed to take a step back and appreciate the “now”.
Regarding including personal stuff on this blog, my only fear is that it will go the way of Mr Cutts’ blog, which once was a hunting ground for fascinating clues and tid-bits, but is now just the self-righteous dronings of a middle-aged man (IMO). But hey, it’s your blog, don’t let me tell u what to do.
Anyway, very pleased the king of links is back, in one way or another!
Hey Duncan, thanks for the welcome back comment. No worries on me getting too personal on here as it keeps us off-point, off-focus, and I’m really not an attention whore. I started this site as blogs were originally intended to be, online diaries, and it grew into something more business-like, so be it…
I’m back, learning lots of stuff and just doing nothing taught me a lot, too. Some SERPs are crazy bouncing, some drop, some are unaffected by inactivity, so go figure. But more on that later, soon.
By the way Duncan, (and whoever else reads this site) do you have the site bookmarked in a browser and check back regularly for updates or are you getting RSS blog post notifications, or what?
Thanks,
Dan
I’m the same Dan, have been reading here for ages and although i do have you on RSS i don’t check that much, i just check back randomly, your the first dude i look up whenever i come across a link building tool of any sort!
Good to see you back!
Bit of both, have RSS, but also check back in the hope that the RSS is just not working
Ok, thanks it’s something I’m wondering about for future sites I create I’m looking for something that does RSS readership subscription sign up and notification better
Hey Dan! Welcome Back! I check back every day for updates… So glad to finally see your new post! Anyway, don’t forget to update the Effective Link Building section.
Jason, thanks that section is the main reason I’m coming back as I don’t want people buying services that don’t work, but so far nothing better has arrived on the scene, we shall soon see though,
Dan
Yaaaaaaay!!!!! I was looking for your obituary for the last few weeks…Glad I can stop wasting my time on that. I think all 5+ of your readers really value your expertise. Soooooo happy to hear that more reviews are on their way. You are like a lamp in all of this SEO muddy darkness!
Hey Kaliki, yes please stop looking, we don’t want to encourage any Higher Power with any ideas via power of suggestion!
More reviews and seo stuff coming shortly, thanks for your patience,
Dan
Welcome back. Glad you’ve taken on your fitness endeavor. Nothing like feeling in shape and not being out of breath going up a few stairs. Plus, chicks dig guys who are in shape as well.
Looking forward to your reviews as you’ve had the chance to go thoroughly through a few products/services.
Thanks Paul I appreciate your comment and feeling in shape too
Dan
I’m glad you are back and I’m very much looking forward to some new reviews. I tend to get my “what services are working right now” information from this blog so it sucked seeing it stale for so long.
Thanks Trent, part of the reason site went stale was to let all the Pandalization dust settle, otherwise tests were just sorta useless, especially when trying to measure up success and failures against a changing algoirthm, but those are excuses and I know that, sorry.
Dan
Dan the Man is back!!!! (pause for applause and cheers….maybe a few cartwheels). Glad to see things going are going well for you. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got cookin’.
Congrats on losing 50 pounds, dude. The svelte new 2012 model Dan is sure to attract the right passenger.
Nothing like having the right person to ride through life with you. All the best to you, sir.
Thanks Paul, I just sent you an email. I’d like to think that I was jonesing to return to blogging which is why I’m back, but it probably has more to do with sustaining tendonitis in knees and elbow therefore running and lifting have taken a lower, temporary priority for me.
Dan 2012 will try to find a good mix of business and pleasure and try to drop one of the IT gigs.
I’m busy building mini-sites now and as soon as I have one done I apply a test to it, but I also have to figure out the best way to test older domains, main url and inner urls, and what we could expect to learn from tests on sites like that, too, fun fun, fun
Dan
Welcome back. Kindly don’t forget to test again Buildmyrank.com
I join it, but seem like its not working, as it was.
How long it take to SERP improve using BMR?
Are you sure using twitter and facebook can help in serp? any test on it?
Thanks.
Thanks Sajid, yes I will have to figure out a new test for BMR whic his still solid though.
Does Facebook and Twitter help with rankings? Not really, the links and Likes don’t pass much juice, but can pass traffic to the site, plus it also makes sites look more legit to the visitors and consumers visiting your site.
Please remember that Google Chrome users’ feedback on some sites mirrored almost EXACTLY how the Panda alogirthms devalued some sites and backlinks (FACT) , therefore it seems that if you build a site that users like and trust then there’s long-term benefits to that for rankings, at very least you’re assured of hedging your bets to avoid any penalties or slaps (Educated Guess).
Thanks,
Dan
Hey man,
Glad to see you back. Congrats on the marathon and the new Dan 2.0
Kurt
Thanks Kurt, hope you’re well
Dan
Good body shape and healthy physique is indeed one of the best things in life you own, Dan. I was following some other blogs and one of their posts made me click your not-so-dead site
Would love to see the latest service reviews from you post panda age. I’m adding your site to my read list.
Cheers for your entry!
Sun, welcome to the minimal readership following
glad to have you aboard, good stuff lies ahead.
And yes, the first appointment of the day should be with yourself, the rest can wait but balancing it all without going to extremes is key.
Thanks,
Dan
Hey DMAC!
Congrats mate on your dedication to working offline just as hard as you do online.. it really looks as tho its making a serious difference to your life & mega kick a$$ attitude these days.
Keep it up bro & all the best.
Cheers
JB
Thanks mate!, looking forward to working more with you on current and future projects
Doing lots of site building these days, and working for a living again (sigh!)
Thanks for sending Spike’s book along, autographed and everything
Dan
I’ve checked this site off and on for the past few months. It’s one of the few(only?) legit SEO tool/technique review sites out there. Glad to see you’re back and healthy. I’m actually moving out to Colorado soon because I just love the active/outdoor lifestyle. Cutting back on work hours and increasing “living life” hours is nice.
Ryan, thanks for your persistence
Good move, good call on the work/life/health balancing act…
Keep it up!
Dan
Glad you’re back and even looking buff! First thing I noticed was the avatar. I’d say you have a few more than 5 readers. And I have been checking back often. Looking forward to your new reviews and information.
Thanks Bill, it’s good to be back. I’m seeing how passionate I always was about this topic…
Dan
Congrats on the weight loss.
I really think you should take another look at Authority Link Network. I’ve gotten pretty decent results after switching over from Linx Boss. It’s a pain posting but, it seems to be giving me a bit of a bump.
Not anything earth shattering, but definitely worth doing a full test on.
Thanks James, I will do a test with them, on them I mean… I didn’t review it fully because it was too new at the time, but now it’s looking like it’s gonna be around for the long haul, so worth reviewing
Thanks for the reminder and comment,
Dan
