Combination services case study #1

in Case studies

A lot of people ask me what combination of services work really well together,  so I decided to do some case studies using more than one service at a time on a site, something I don’t generally do because I aim to keep my testing methodology valid.

Good link building campaigns have multiple style links coming in all at once, and people want to know which combos work best, so here goes.

Combination services case study #1

  • Since the site I will be referring to in this case study is going to have Adsense on it  I’m not going to reveal the domain url like I usually do.
  • I’m going to use 2 hands-off services (Link Aloha and Linx Boss) to manage all the backlinking for this case study.
  • I have hired a writer to write the on-site content

NOTES:

  • Link Aloha is not an open nor recommended service right now (as some commenters here have astutely pointed out you can generate links with Sick Profile Maker and some links packets and still get the same amount of links and drip-feed them, but I digress)

Wow, lots of blather there, let’s get down to the niche (financial) we’re gonna test out this combination of services out on.

ME:

I got a pretty good .org domain, and keyword-rich too.

Domain name has most of the high search terms keywords in it

ZERO links to start with (no duh!)

THEM: the competition

The REAL competition consists of 3 websites (the top3 that appear some same variety/mix of term my domain will rank for):

Site 1: 600 inbound, ranked #1 for what I consider the least difficult of these 3 very competitive terms).  Site 1 has vast majority of links going to the main url (around 98%) and a smattering going elsewhere on site like the contact us page)

Site 2: Ranked #2 behind site 1 for second hardest term.  According to YSP, it has 190.00 plus inbound links to their site.  Surprisingly, this site ALSO has vast majority of links going to their main domain url (boy are they in for a surprise soon!).

Site 3: Ranked #2 for most difficult term, behind site 1.  Has over 6,000 inbound links to it, has SOME of my keywords in the domain name, but also has a top-heavy inbound linking history (ie. most links go to main domain url) just not as bad as the other 2 sites.

How I will build backlinks for this site:

Linx Boss for links to main domain url for 3 KW mix, starting with a heavy emphasis initiall yon the long tial terms, meaning that I will put the easiest of the 3 main terms in as the primary anchor text, so it gets the most backlinks right off the bat

Why?  Because I want to get ranked for that long-tail ASAP, and when achieved, I will drop it back to a teritary status (3d most important anchor/kw)

Link Aloha - drip feed links to inner pages, until they rank well.  Methinks this will take a while because even the non-major keywords are very competitive, and forum profile links generated by xrumer services are known to drop off at a pretty good clip.

Week 1-

  • Registered domain, got it indexed,
  • put an ezinearticle on site as a starter article, let that get indexed
  • added domain and 3 anchor keywords into a Linx Boss campaign
  • Also added same 3 keywords and main domain url into Aloha, and will keep it going like that for another week then switch Aloha over to one of the inner urls

UPDATE: July 16th, 2 1/2 weeks later

  • Long tail term in domain name- Page 10
  • Main keyword term in domain name – Page 11
  • Super hard keyword to rank for in domain name- not in first 20 pages

    Hey Dan,
This looks like an interesting case study. I was just wondering what your feelings are about the “top heavy” link building tactics….as in , “they are in for a surprise”. Say, you go for only pretty competitive terms and get exact to near exact match domains, and since it is easier to just buy another domain and basically cherry pick keywords due to the domain relevancy, is it recommended to just have related pages on the “cherry picker sites” just for the sake of having more pages and sending links to them to avoid being too top heavy?

    Thanks for the help

David, I think you’re referring to a mini-net mini site building approach here for tackling tough terms, and yes, that would work, but mini-sites have limited kws to write about so best thing to do there, is be a “bore”, write about the same slew of ultra-targeted kws all the time, evne though only 2 pages at most will get indexed for certain terms.

Something people tend to froget a lot is that search habits and vernacular change over time, therefore the keywords you’re targeting must be updated as well.

Another thing to remember is LSI inclusion, targeting the not so obvious keywords and phrases to raise your on page relevancy to a higher level.

The top 3 sites mentioned in this post are not keyword rich domains, so they probably HAD to push most of their juice to the main domain. Look at the url of my blog you’re on now, I regret this domain name choice more and more every day but site evolved beyond its original purpose, but I’ve started a domain called linkbuildingservicesreview.com which is rising upin the SERPS quite easily, in less time than it took for this site to reach those rankings positions for some of this site’s main kws.

Point being, domains names are crucial to ranking well, better, and faster as we know, but the d name reference din this post is actually very kw rich, is 4 words and targets 4 main kws, therefore I predict boldly, hehe that I will be page page with about 600 links and will have luxury of being able to divert my attention to building links to the inner pages of this small site, and since it’s a small site, the link juice to the main domain with spread to the inner pages better, that’s the value and power of mini-sites with exact keyword matching domains.

This post on one of my other blogs explains a little bit about what I mean hee about link juice to main domain affecting inner pages http://danielmcgonagle.name/seo-tip-how-to-build-a-tightly-spiralled-site/
