Do Follow Blog Commenting, does it work?

in SEO Tips and Articles

Recently there’s been a spate of questions about doing blog commenting for backlinks, so we decided to do one measly test…

The website: ranked #8 for the term in the exact match domain, 2 word phrase

The competition: One other exact match domain (with .com TLD), several authority sites, and hardly any of these sites outranking mine have backlinks to them.

The test: Simple test here, one that should prove out with pretty good results.

Ordered 50 Pr1-Pr5 blog commenting links from a source that shall not be named here, merely because it’s not the best bang for your buck when trying to get links form blog comments on URLS with Page Rank.

It should take about 2 weeks to get this ordered filled…

Side Notes:

#1- when you see your competition is amazon, wikipedia, entepreneur.com, about.com or some other “authority sites”, you shouldn’t be discouraged from trying to outrank them, since they’re ranking for those terms without even trying, without doing any active backlinking for those particular terms.

Since link building is all about adding “votes” and relevancy to your sites, your active backlinking will soon overtake those authority sites in the rankings.

#2- Part of what we can learn about this blog commenting test is that a few quality links could do more than hundreds or thousands of backlinks (not that I’d need this many backlinks to rank the site in case study better).  Some people like to say that you should focus on getting quality backlinks versus quantity of links but the REALITY is that quality backlinking takes time, and isn’t exactly the best option for people who are trying to rank a lot of urls for a lot of different terms.

Take this case study as an example…  IF this works, and it should, are you will to spend 50 dollars for each and every term you want to rank better?

Maybe using ScrapeBox or Blog Commenting tools (Blogfinder, Commenthut, Commenting demon, Comment Kahuna etc…) would be a better option here, but in my opinion, when you want to test something SEO -related out for yourself, it’s best to use a service provider because they’ll get it done right, there’s no tools to buy and learn and use, and if it works out well, then you can consider moving forward with this part of your SEO strategy.

What’s happening with this test so far?

Once some new links started getting generated, the site got pushed back to page 2 and stopped earning money…

New backlinks to a site with zero backlinks to it previously tends to push it back in the SERPs temporarily, and same thing occurs when you push a lot of links to a site when site previously didn’t have tons of links to them (it’s why xrumer users need to be wary of what they do).

Also note that link velocity is important, and getting 50 links to a site that previously had none, but not continuing the linking means you sorta did a blast here, not a ramped-up campaign, so keep in mind that steady linking sometimes does more for solid, stable, even increased rankings than a mini-blast of 50 links in 2 weeks time would.

Current ranking: #8, right where the site was prior to this test.  Maybe it will go up, after the linking in continued, but for now, it seems worthless.  Yahoo Site Explorer only shows 7 backlinks though, none of them from blog comments.

In my opinion 50 backlinks of any kind once indexed…should have moved this site up quite a bit.  I would never do a hit-and-run linking campaign for a site that had zero backlinks to it anyways as that isn’t a good way to establish linking and ranking momentum.

Stay Tuned, I’ll do more blog commenting for this particular url once it gets more links accredited to it

UPDATE, September 4, 2010:

3 weeks after ordering, today I found 3 of the links and am now at #2, instead of #8 where I started, so we’ll see if this sticks

Cool. Looking forward to your results!

I have to admit that I’ve been using blog comments only to a very limited degree (I believe they aren’t highly valuable, but haven’t done a lot of testing with them). Generally, I comment when starting with a new linking campaign as I’ve seen blog comments picked up fairly quickly and they can help get new pages/sites indexed, in my experience.

Thanks Shane, my backlinks via comments order was ordered 2-3 weeks ago, the dancing started 2 days later, and still nothing’s showing up in backlink checkers, but I really just rely on SERPs changes, and the rankings for this site are back to square one. I could pop this EMD in to Linx Boss for 2-4 weeks and not have to worry about it ranking, but knowledge is power man. I need to know if blog links are devalued, and if not, just how many of these versus other types of links, are needed to rank a somewhat easy term

Yep interested to see this as well. I’ve never been organised enough to isolate the results but I’m pretty sure they work, especially links from high PR (even spam filled pages).

When I ran my websites through the Seomoz tools they nearly always rated the links I had from high PR blog posts as the most valuable and with the most trust.

Although they also said I shouldn’t use them ;)

Dan – I may have tried the same service. Your terms sound very familiar to what I tried out. I was not impressed in the slightest in my testing. I ordered a sizable amount more than you; wide keywords.

IMO G has definitely discounted their value.

On the report I received, I checked them out. Everything was 100% correct as advertised – except the sites simply looked spammed. Junk spam comments. (The service comments were quality, but just surrounded by junk).

Just my experience.

Hey Dan,

Can you email me the source for this service? I’m interested to know… because I’m currently thinking about trying for for blog commenting service I found in the WF. I’m wondering if that’s the same service you just used right now.

I echo Elbert – any comments on which service you utilized?

Chris, I emailed him the url, but am hesitant to do so again since I want to make sure there’s something close to 50 links generated, seen, credited etc….

Yeah, it’s a different service than I saw in the WF. I’ll email Dan about this other one and see what’s his opinion about it. It’s much cheaper, offer more, and looks very popular.

Another great test, Dan. IMHO blog commenting works, i have always tried to mix up my range of links, having said that i have tried 3 different blog commenting high PR services, 2 of which targeted a range of mega spam comment blogs eg PR 5 with 38 !!!!! pages of spam blog comments. I’d be shocked if these had any credibility in the big G’s eyes, the third service i used went for volume on lower PR, n/a to 1 generally. The common theme with all 3 was that the links were not showing in YSE or Backlink watch and whilst the sites being linked to already a varied link profile i am confident these services did nothing to advance rankings. However getting my outsourcers to do it manually to a plan seeking relevancy and quality i have seen a solid contribution towards ranking progress. Keep us posted on your test and any feedback on blog commenting services that are effective would be very interesting.

Many thanks for this site. Its a great resource and I’ve ordered a few items through your links, which I’m happy to do as you have me some money by not buying less than optimal link building services. I’ve not had much experience with blog commenting but have had some success with profile links. I ordered a package of 25 Web 2.0 profile back links to a new .me (exact match domain) and thats now in #8 (uk results) for a modestly competive hosting keyword phrase. Indeed my “aged” “authority” PR5 site in now on page 2 for the same term. Shame there isn’t much traffic!! Anyway would have to repeat the test on another new domain to be sure.

Good work there, now go tell this to the guy who said EMDs and profiles links don’t work :)

I’m impressed with the test and will look forward to the next installment of this very informative article. Hope that pros and cons of keywords would be discussed further. Thanks

I’ve had some pretty decent success with blog commenting, however I’ve never done a test with blog commenting alone so I’m interested in how this pans out. Keep the updates coming.

Ive got myself 10k of .gov and .edu blog posts which I am randomly leaving comments here and there to some web 2.0 sites I control so I will tell you how things go.

Also any ideas on the best blog commenting software? I have fast blog finder which I initially thought was great but now im not so sure? I might just need to used it for a little while longer?

Definitely not recommended, no links showed up yet, and the EMD was ranked just by doing social bookmarking to it anyway

I’m using this other blog commenting service and it’s pretty good value/cost wise. Problem I have is, “if/when” these comments do get indexed, they will eventually get de-indexed within a month.

So far, what I find is that you should use blog comments sparsely, especially for a small sites, if you outsource 1,000+ links.
