I felt compelled to write this article because I read something by some guy who proclaims to be a professional SEO stating that footer links just don’t work anymore.
I beg to differ…
2 reasons why I know they work.
#1- Look at the bottom of this site here and see whose blog theme I am using, then go to their site and see how it’s a Page Rank 8.
They achieved this by giving away a pretty good blog theme and whoever uses their theme is providing a backlink to their site.
I think having a PR8 is sufficient evidence to state confidently that footer links do work!
#2- There’s a person I know of who is ranked on Page 2 for the term “make money online” and the way he achieved this is he sells a lot of MRR products, and whenever someone uses the sales page provided for them in their MRR package, they are then putting up a site with his backlink at the footer of the sales page.
At the footer of these sales pages he’s giving away (as part of the MRR packages), there is anchor text for the term Make Money Online and it links to his keyword-rich domain name.
So, he’s ranked page 2 for an extremely competitive term just by utilizing the POWER of footer links, which do, indeed, still work!

I had a reasonably new website that wasn’t getting ranked and as a bit of an experiment I added a footer link to this site from my PR2 site with sub page PR1 and literally overnight the site that wasn’t ranking went to PR1 with no other link building activity by me. So I would say that footer links do work.
Footer links may not have the weight of Header/Body content, but still very useful for anchoring your Name or Brand or important keywords. I tend not to use them site-wide, usually only on the strongest pages. I also like Footer space as simply a great place for a sentence or two of more High-Level, Overarching content to help convey your sites ‘Aboutness’ – whether linked or not.
