Do Guest Bloggers Get Good Backlinks With Guest Author Posts?
Since this site is about link building and SEO, the first part of this post is going to discuss what kind of link juice you can expect from doing guest blogging.
Most places that accept guest authors posts don’t have DoFollow outbound link attributes, therefore when you write a post and link back to your site somewhere usually you’re not getting max juice from those links.
I really don’t want to rehash the old argument of whether or not NoFollow backlinks have value, but I did some experiments with several guest author posts.
Results: Page one now for the term, therefore the NoFollow attribute did have some accreditation involved. The URL had been sitting on pages 6-7 for 2 weeks prior to the links obtained from guest author posts.
Other experiment done: Was page 1 for a highly competitive term, sometimes page 2 and I wrote a series of posts a few months ago on a high-traffic blog. Those posts all got Page Rank 3 on their own but the links really didn’t help much because the site itself had tons of OBLs (OutBound LinkS) on it so it didn’t really pass much SEO weight or juice towards the destination URLs.
Confusing, right?
The PageRank 3 posts didn’t send much juice, yet 2 NoFollow links on Page Rank 0 posts passed enough juice along to bump a URL up to page 1. If a term isn’t highly competitive then a few good links will help a lot, whereas competitive terms will need a lot more than 4-5 backlinks to boost its SERPs.
Again, no surprises there and I’m “preaching to the choir” since pretty much everyone knows that more competition requires more link juice in order to rank well.
Can you rank for whatever terms you want just by doing guest blogging?
First of all, I would never recommend that anyone be solely dependent on one method or source for backlinks.
Secondly, it would take a lot of top-quality unique content on a lot of blogs via guest author posts to get ranked for highly competitive terms, as my 2 experiments alluded to above proved (to me at least).
Thirdly, (is thirdly even a word? please let me know
), you will make more money with direct traffic from other blogs with guest author posts. I was surprised at how effective guest blogging was for my “bottom line” and I really didn’t do guest blogging for income reasons, only to ascertain the value of backlinks obtained from highly relevant, related blogs that are already talking about my subject matter.
True Value of Guest Blogging…?
#1 Direct traffic…
If you want an immediate surge of truly interested traffic, then guest blogging will do exactly that for you and your sites. I think that there could be more value to be obtained from guest blogging than from submitting articles to article directories because it takes a little while for articles to get indexed, then to rank well, if at all, which means it takes time to see some benefits from that article submission.
Whereas when you write a guest author post, you’re writing for that other sites’ RSS readership, (if any) and you’re placing your content on a highly relevant site. More importantly, though, guest blogging is a very practical way of “taking part in the discussion” of your niche and exposing yourself, your site, and your expertise (if any) to a wider audience.
#2 Authority…
If your content is approved by the guest host then it passed “muster” and was deemed to be high-enough quality for the readers of that site to get exposed to. The readers of THAT blog will accept the content as good by default merely because it got posted by the owner.
Sometimes even the guest blog owners will turn into “converts” and “fans of YOU” when you write content that WOWs them.
#3 Relationship building…
As mentioned in the previous paragraph you will get to know other site owners in your niche when you write for their blogs, and I highly recommend that you try to get these people onto your Skype or other instant messaging programs. Sometimes backdoor discussions will take place that will help both parties understand concepts they’re not experts in, yet.
I know that my technical skills are inferior, or not as good as some people on my Skype, and some of those people don’t know what OBLs are, could learn a lot about on-site architecture, semi-automated linking mechanisms etc… Therefore the trade-off in these quick little discussions can help you develop new skills and new understanding of concepts much faster than reading e-books or even reading blogs.
