How To Use HubPages Hubs For SEO Link building

in Link building Tips

This post will discuss how and why you want to incorporate hubs into your seo and link building portfolio/strategies.

If you’re in need of a quality backlink, you really can’t go wrong with HubPages.com “hubs”.

  • These hubs tend to achieve PageRank pretty easily
  • They can produce DoFollow backlinks with a high enough hub author score (75 last I heard)
  • It’s scalable (you can create unlimited amounts of hubs)

With HubPages you create “hubs”, which is a good name for these types of pages and a good concept to explore in your overall SEO and Link Building strategies.  The term hub means center of activity which is what authority sites are… To be a hub, or to be an authority means you need to be talking about/linking to not just yourself but others as well, much like WikiPedia does.  Selfishly hoarding your links and limiting them to just internal on-site links doesn’t show the search engines you’re an authority, it merely depicts your site as an “island”.

HubPages hub -making features:

Related Hubs

Related Hubs done automatically

When you create a hub you can link to other related hubs quite easily.  Some hub layouts do this for you automatically and some layouts require you to do it manually.  As mentioned above, linking to other related sites shows the search engines that you’re hub-like in nature with your linking and is conducive to being deemed more of an “authority” because of this cross-linking, other-linking pattern.

The picture on the left shows Related Hubs that were automatically inserted/displayed and while this isn’t the REAL SEO boost that makes your hub score well, it definitely is one of the factors that makes hubs rank well with minimal effort.

NOTE: I still get some Google alerts alerts for when my name is mentioned somewhere on the internet and a good portion of these alerts are coming from when my hubs get displayed on others hubs in the Related Hubs section of their hubs.

Therefore, it stands to reason that the more hubs you have, the more mentions you’ll get, and this leads to more traffic for your hubs.  However, the traffic you can expect from displayed Related Hubs is minimal but it’s also free backlinks from other hubs, which leads to easier rankings for the hubs themselves.

HubScores:  Some things to be concerned about here….

You need a hub author score of 75 or above to have your outbound links on your hub to be DoFollow, and this is really the main reason why you’d want to build a hub in the first place; to get a high quality, decent Page Rank Dofollow backlink.

HubPage Score

HubPage Score

However, scores are given based on quality of content, layout (linking to other hubs), and the amount of traffic that the hub gets.  Sometimes your hub’s score will go down despite great content and there are 2 ways to increase your hub score

1- Write more content for a quick boost via hub re-assessment

2- Drive more traffic to the hub via article marketing and link building

The issue here with making Hubs is that you have to write a mini-site’s worth of content and/or do some link building to get it a steady amount of traffic, and that can be  a lot of work just for ONE quality backlink.

Since it’s easy to fall into the trap of writing continuously to a hub to keep the score up, you have to consider whether or not you want to devote all this time just to get ONE backlink from it.

So you need to ask yourself if you want to make robust hubs to get their scores up, or send continued direct traffic to them for hub score boosting and maintaining the DoFollow backlinks obtained from these hubs back to your money sites.

Even if you do create robust hubs with 4-5 content pieces, you’ll still need some traffic in order to maintain the hubscore and dofollow link attributes, so read this article on how to use Unique Article Wizard to see how I get a steady flow of backlinks and direct traffic to my hubs and other Web 2.0 properties.

Using Hubs for link building:

Now, there’s more to making hubs than getting 1-3 backlinks from your hub content.

RSS – You can add links in your hubs to RSS feeds from related sites, whether they be your money sites, other hubs you made on similar topics, other Web 2.0 properties etc…

There’s an expression,”a rising tide lifts all boats” so when you focus on building up the authority of your hubs and they’re linking to several other web entities optimized for similar terms, the authority of the hubs acts like a rising tide that boosts or merely just solidifies the SEPRs of the other entities linked to from these hubs.

Twitter - You can Tweet your hub content to Twitter to help it get indexed faster.  Read about Twitter link wheels to understand how you can get even more backlinks automatically to your websites.

But do you really want to go to all this effort to develop one single solitary backlink?

As mentioned above, a hub is good for linking to more than just one website and can be used to link to several web properties form jus tone hub.

  • One solid hub linking to your other hubs lifts those “boats”
  • Several hubs linking to your sites’ RSS feed and pulling displaying that RSS content leads to more links and direct traffic to those sites.
  • The more hubs you have, you larger your web influence becomes, and the easier it gets for your other hubs to rank well and for your main sites to develop link juice.

So don’t think of a hub as something you’ll work on to create 1-3 decent Dofollow backlinks.  Think of them as entities you’ll want to develop to create link building portals/spheres of influence.

Due to my link building “prowess” I’ve actually gotten some hubs to rank highly for their optimized terms, which wasn’t the goal originally but all the direct traffic and backlinks sent to them caused for some pretty good rankings.

Personally, the next step is to figure out the best monetization strategies for the hubs I build because they’re overtaking some of my money sites in the SERPs…more on that later once I figure out how to best monetize hubs.

NOTE: As the know it all who just left a comment pointed out, there’s a difference between hub AUTHOR score and score of a hub itself, my apologies if I left a word out, which apparently makes entire post “full of wrong information” lol  :)

Hmm This post is almost 100 words… but leave one word out and it’s “full of wrong information eh?

They’re no-follow! Ahh man, that sucks. That means you’ve got to “work hard” on it to get a ranking of 75 before its even a dofollow backlink — GRRRRR. I already work hard on my own websites, I have to do the same for my hubs — thats a real bummer.

My level of disappointment really depends on how much work it takes to get it to that do-follow level. If it takes a LONG time and lots of content, well, I guess I am screwed over and won’t be using hubpages.

Every new post you do, I find myself needing UAW more and more…… You wouldn’t happen to know of any “specials” or discounts for UAW going on, would you? That would be great if you did — but I won’t hold my breath.

I know its not your problem, but im about to get BLS too and these monthly fees keep adding up & up & up.

On a side note, your site is now my official “link building resource” got it book marked and am now checking it every day. Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Sean, if your one-page hubs rank well for the keywords you target, then you don’t need to do much to keep them highly scored. It’s kind of a catch-22; put the work in to get it to a Dofo9llow score level, but this limits your ability to do other things…

I don’t know of any discounts for UAW and am not sure they’ll give any away. I find them rather un-responsive to emails sent, non-responsive actually….

Thanks for the feedback on the site, I appreciate it!

Hey there! I’m the Community Manager over at HubPages, just poking my head in to add my two cents.

It’s really not that hard to get a hubber score over 75. Just make sure you follow the rules regarding linking (no more than 2 links to a single domain per hub) and post only unique content (that is, nothing you’ve also published on other sites). It also doesn’t hurt to get involved in the community a little… take the time to participate a little in the forums, follow some other users, read some hubs, leave thoughtful comments. We reward users who aren’t just trying to scam the system.

Happy Hubbing!

Hey Maddie, and right you are in that hubs aren’t made for scamming, that’s why manual reviews and other hubbers reviewing content makes hubpages a powerhouse still unlike Squidoo, or rather..more so than Squidoo. Same idea applies to ezineArticles.com, too, manually reviewed content which leads to higher quality sites, content and eventually, backlinks.

I’m not saying that Hubs are made for backlinks only, as the post here said, but also for getting quality backlinks and easily creating quality sites that get ranked well on their own with little effort. I wrote this post because it amazed me how some of my hubs are ranking, even for terms I wasn’t “working on”

Thanks for stopping by,

Dan

This was very helpful for me. I use to be a Hubber, but I let it slide because I really didn’t know what I was doing. I am trying to get back into it and this frank and informative article was very helpful. Thank you.

My question is this: which link building strategy is the fastest and why?

Tony, is this a real question?

Nice article! Thanks for the info. One question: I have some articles and what not that I’ve written for my blog which I would prefer to just put up on hubpages but is this going to make hubpages mad at me? Or will Google see this as spamming and reduce my serp?

Thanks!

Daniel McGonagle May 31, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Hey Evan, thanks for the question.

HubPages won’t accept duplicate content, at least not for long…. best bet is to analyze your traffic/sales funnel see how you can use the hub entity to lead the reader into clicking something that sends them to your site, then take desired action. You could also post your blog content as an article to be submitted to an article directory without penalty in SERPs.

Thanks,

Dan

Thank you for your easy to understand writing style – helped me as
I recently put up my first hub – knocked off promptly because I treated it like a WP “sales” article ( too many links to my sites )*
Correcting and republishing . Look forward to your reads *

Full of wrong information.Your author score (hubrank) on hubpages should be 75 and above. The actual hub score needs to only be above 40 (used to be 50 but they recently changed it). Once those two criteria are met then the hub will be do follow.

1100 words and picked that to comment on, I added that missing word in where appropriate, thanks for helping me out.

Hope you got the major point of it all (the other 1098 words)

Hi Daniel. I’ve only recently started using Hubpages for the reasons you mention above. I’m being a bit dumb here but can you confirm if its the hubpages score above 75 that sets an in individual hub to ‘do follow’ the authors score that sets all your hubs to do follow? Thanks!

I have been creating hubpages for some time now, and I now have 11 hubpages but the number of visitors I get to the mini sites is very small. I think your point is valid that at the end one has to determine if it is worth it or not. I will give it more time to see how it will work out.

I’m creating a hubpage and the message reads “There already exists a Hub with this title on HubPages. You can still use this title if you like, but you might consider changing it.”

My question: should I think of another title or use the want I really want? is there a drawback if I don’t choose another title?

Doesn’t matter, add a plural to it, add an S, or word review, or training or bonus or information etc…..

Elle,

I agree with Dan, adding “s” or rephrasing some words will sure help.

I really appreciate this info-packed post about HubPages. I’ve known I needed to do this and have been procrastinating. This is just the impetus I needed! I’m very grateful and you’re definitely someone who I would benefit from following! Thanks.

There is no doubt in saying you that Hubpages are in fact great and quality source for getting good quality backlinks.
But it depend the ways you go with Hubpages.Thery are never for scamming or spamming.

Wow! Thanks Daniel, I have only just read here that Hubpages are NoFollow for high scoring hubbers. I have only done one hub which got close to 80 score but not knowing this truth and other facts you revealed in this post blinded me from benefiting from the power of nubpages.

I’m going to do more HubPages and also implement the steps in this post.

Stella, I think you meant DoFollow not NoFollow right?

Just be aware that hubs took a hit recently, and whilst many hubs maintained PR, they didn’t maintain rankings, just a word of caution there…. Use hubs, lenses etc… flesh them out, build links to them, make them your tier 2 or tier 3 links to money site

I just setup a Hubpage for the first time today, and came across this article after I signed up. I recently learned about the “Google Panda” update and see how it is affecting sites such as this one.

I currently follow the same advice that you give regarding using high authority sites such as this to build traffic back to a money site. I can’t imagine not doing it that way and falling victim to Google changing algorithms and watch my traffic go down the drain. It’s all about diversifying the traffic! Thanks for the tips!

There are so many different ways to get links to your site, do you really think the effort to build a hub is worthwhile? Secondly, wouldn’t it be easier to build Squidoo lenses instead (presuming that there are only so many hours in the day to devote to SEO)?

Daniel, I recently a Hub Page and found it quite hard to get a score of 75. Typically my core is 63 at best. I have both videos and images on the hubs and all the content is 100% unique (750 words).

I write about specialist advice relating to fireplaces which is not really available on the internet, and many people comment (on our own site) saying how useful the content is.

Thanks for the advice Daniel … I will try editing the content and see if I can get any improvements

Started 2 hubs about a month ago. All unique content. Both have a score over a 75. Plus both of them have over 800 words. Plus I go in and add content every day. So I have built a couple real nice hubs. You personal score must be over 75 for your links to be DO Follow. Everyday I answered questions and talked in the forum. So I participated and added a lot of content to their site. My personally score slowly but steady raised to 79. For the past week they have lowered my personal score every day and today it is a 70. Which makes my links No Follow. I spend every day adding value to their site but still they are lowering my score. At the end of the day it is really too much work for a couple of links. Plus I have not gotten any traffic from the hubs. I am going to give it a week and put more effort in. If they do not raise my score I will just take my content and put it on Ezine or another article directory. I am not going to waste the great content that I put so much effort into. I really do not think Hub Pages is worth the work.

But I have noticed that hubpages have nofollow for outgoing links so how does it help for link building. However, Squidoo provides do follow links.

Nice article.

I was a Hubber for about 9 months and wrote 91 articles. I am drifting away from Hubpages because I don’t really enjoy a 60 to 40 revenue split.

Your article is truly correct though, it is amazing how Hubs will get an article you produce to page one so easily. This is something I am having a lot of trouble with on my blog because I am spoiled by Hubpages doing the difficult stuff for me. :)
