Is Building Backlinks Causing Decreased Rankings?

A lot of people get worried when they start building backlinks
and their sites start going backwards in the SERPsĀ  once those links “hit”…

You really shouldn’t worry too much about this since there are 2 things happening here, in my opinion…

You’re strengthening your position in the SERPs by building those backlinks so an adjustment needs to be made by the search engines…

In my humble opinion, when you start building new backlinks, or you start ramping up your linkbuilding campaign again, the search engines are re-evaluating your site, your site urls being linked to, and establishing your “True Ranking” when the first links start hitting those URLs…

What is True Ranking?

True Ranking (a term I think I just made up…) is basically a solid position/ranking in the SERPs…

Have you ever submitted an article or published a new article on your site, and once it gets indexed, rises to the top of the search engines, only to fade away to the “back” pages, or into search engine listings obscurity?

This happens a lot with article submitted to the major article directories, and the rankings for those articles generally go up and down and you’re never really sure when or where that article is going to rank, really…

Sometimes an article or new blog post will do this, and will appear on page 1, or not even on the first 5 pages, then it just comes and goes…

These URLS don’t have True Ranking because the rankings are hopping around all over the place, and you can’t tell if you need to build backlinks to those URLS yet because even the search engines don’t know how to rank your URLs.

To attain True Ranking, you need backlinks to solidify your positions, but when you do this, often times there will be a “backlash” of sorts, and your rankings will decrease, and might even fall into obscuirty for a little while.

You fix this by getting a steady flow of quality backlinks and by being patient…

SEO is a patient persons’ game, which is why overlinking is so common and why so many people fail to stick with their linkbuilding efforts long enough to see the results they want…

Have you ever social bookmarked one of your site URLs and viewed your social bookmarking blurb on page 1,2, or 3, only to disappear in a week or two?

Those social bookmarking URLs and the backlinks from them are exampe sof ranked listing that do not have True Ranking…

You will hardly EVER see a social bookmarking blurb at the top of the search engines for a competitive term because there’s usually not a lot of content on them, and those blurbs are usually duplicate pieces of content…

And due to the fact that there’s not a lot of content, the content is “dupe” content usually, those pieces of virtual real estate have no staying power and don’t remain ranked highly for a long time in competitive niches.

If you have a URL that is ranked well and you try to increase it’s ranking with backlinks, the backlash that sometimes comes from the newly obtained backlinks is temporary…

If someone builds a better site or published something with better on-page SEO, then they will bump you out of the top spots if your SERP didn’t have True Ranking.

The reason social bookmarking blurbs, new article directory articles, blog posts, or site pages get pushed back into search engine obscurity many times in competitive niches (or for competitive keywords and phrases) is because they really didn’t deserve to be there in the first place.

The search engines are waiting for a “better” piec eof virtual real estate to index, and will rank it better if the new indexed article, post, page etc… is more relvant in their eyes.

However, to become more relevant without pulling your hair out trying to figure out where you might have “gone wrong” with your content, on-page SEO, or overall site design, the easiest thing to do here is to get more “votes”, A.K.A. backlinks to increase your relevancy in the eyes of the search egnines.

  2. Hi

You’ve addressed just the point I’m worried about. I’ve been wondering about backlinking apps, but, to tell you the honest truth I am rather wary to go ahead with it – even just once.

I have yet to decide on whether or not to put my toe in the water.

  8. Great post Daniel, It seems to me as long as you keep your link building efforts to a slow steady stream or wait a while your site’s ranking will eventually even out.

By the way thanks for suggesting Backlink Solutions it’s working great for me right now along with some other link building strategies.

  10. Hey Shelby, glad to hear that BL Sis working for you. The only complaint sI ever got about that services/my recommendation was during the times they were upgrading their site and ran into some technical issues.

And yes, as long as you maintain link velocity/pace your rankings will settle, then “bounce” as the URLs vie for higher rankings.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  12. Daniel, thanks for the information. I have come across the situation you are talking about. I had a bunch of backlinks that came in at once and it dropped my SERP way down, but a few weeks later it came back strong.

  14. Hey Robert, that’s sort of like a quick time G slap when you get a burst then that burst of links stops.

This also occurs when there’s NO google Dancing going on for your SERPs and they’re steady, but not getting backlinks, then just a few backlinks could cause the temporary decrease in SERPs. It really does stink whenever you see this happening, but the more you see it the less worried you get because you know from experience that it probably means new links are hitting that URL
