Link building myth – getting bad backlinks can hurt you

in Link building Tips

There’s a lot of talk in marketing forums, webmaster forums and of course, sales pages, that mention how getting bad backlinks can cause your site to get banned de-indexed, sand-boxed etc…

This is so dead wrong and defies common sense…

Look at it this way, if getting backlinks from “bad places” could cause your site harm then wouldn’t your competitors be able to figure this out and quickly make your site go “bye-bye”?

So, if you build a purely white-hat site with quality backlinks from trusted domains and have 100% unique content on your site, that STILL leaves you vulnerable to penalties form the search engines if you or someone else gets backlinks from bad neighborhoods or from spammy sites?

If that’s were the case then nobody is safe and it doesn’t matter what you do for link building because you’ll always end up with the possibility of getting kicked out of the SERPs due to an envious and unscrupulous competitor?

No, not gonna happen…

What could hurt you is if you linked out TO bad sites, neighborhoods and what-not…

Had to post this, even if if never gets read because it ticks me off when I see lies like this being spread to give newbie webmasters fear-compulsion to buy or try something new, like a new ebook, product, service etc…

Very true. I have done massive amounts of comment spam and forum spam. End result? Always, always I get much better rankings, even when no other links have been built.

Yahoo on the other hand does seem to derank websites for having bad links pointing to them.

I also believe, whilst google does not derank sites for bad links, they may ignore some bad links in calculating final rank.

Correct, they don’t penalize except for the “penalty” of ignoring some links, giving no credit to site linked to is all

So true and well said. Getting penalized for links that you are unaware of or that you do not solicit or condone, links that are out of your control is so totally illogical.

As one of the “newbie” webmasters to whom you are referring in this post, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to bring some common sense to the subject. I had never thought of this. Surely the search engines would also have the same common sense!

I’m so glad someone on the Warrior Forum pointed me to this post.

You got it, glad to help. We got some resident SEO consultants and experts that are readers of this blog and they will all concur.

What EZ and I are referring to is people were saying Traffic Bug’s service didn’t provide them with links yet go tthem banned for bad links, and we were discussing how getting “bad” links cannot get you banned, fyi.

EZ, thanks for stopping by, grab the RSS feed so you get real SEO advice and reviews :)

    Yeah buddy, twas moi…

WF ticks me off sometimes because everybody rants and raves but there’s hardly any good SEO advice there, or people just aren’t willing to go to the effort to help you rethink your positions

I am a newbie to backlinks building. I created some links then removed them because i found out those sites are “poor”, those seo gurus scared the shit out of me saying thru their blogs and articles that you should not put your link on those sites “avoid linkfarms” avoid this and that and so on.

but i go against it after a few days as i thought that’s crazy, why would i avoid it? what i really should avoid is to link “TO” them not “FROM” them ain’t it? your blog real;y confirms this. Thanks a lot.

Thank for that very useful information, i am new to SEO and have been wondering why so many people say that “bad backlinks” can get you kicked out of googles index. And with that knowledge in my mind at the time i was very very choosy as what sites to gain back links from, and it appears it was a complete waste of time as any links appear to be much better than none, especially if the worst thing to happen is google just dont include a so called bad “link” Thank for bringing some proper light to the situation for me.
