Can you attain high rankings just by using social bookmarking for backlinks?
If anyone tells you that you can definitely accomplish high rankings just by social bookmarking your site urls, they are plain dead wrong.
The reason that social bookmarking may not get you top ranking are:
These types of links are devalued, most of them have “no follow” attributes to their backlinks, and because they’re so easily obtained they’re just given less “SEO Weight”.

Go to your CPanel for your site, in your webhosting area, and open up the AWSTATS section. In there you will see that social bookmarking types of links have their own special category.
But really, what it all comes down to is how strong your competition is…
Merely getting social bookmarking links can help you do well in the SERPS, but since those links are devalued to some degree, more powerful links may be needed, depending on your competition.
An example of a more powerful link would be one from an article published on an article directory like EzineArticles.com. Some of my articles on “EZA” have achieved PageRank of 1 or 2 (so far).
When it comes to linkbuilding and obtaining high-quality backlinks you get what you pay for, or you get out what you put into it.
You could pay for quality backlinks by using a high-end service like LinkVana, Unique Article Wizard, or BackLinkSolutions..
OR…
You could obtain some high quality backlinks by spending time and effort writing and publishing articles.
Also, Social Bookmarking takes time to do manually, and there are tools and services that offer to bookmark a whole slew of your URLS for you, for free or for a fee.
There are also some plugins that will automatically submit new blog posts to random social sites as well.
AutoSocial Poster- paid plugin that submits to random number of social bookmarking sites for each new post. You will spend time setting up all your social site accounts at first, then you save all your login information in a CSV file (like an Excel file), then you upload your CSV file, and modify the ASP (Autosocial Poster plugin settings).
You have to post randomly on your sites and/or your accounts will get banned from those social networking/bookmarking sites.
I don’t use this plugin anymore because I got so many errors from my submissions and it ended up taking a lot of my time to fix and resubmit, but I know people who recommend it highly, and that’s their #1 source for obtaining social bookmarking links.
Social Bookmarking Demon – manual method of social bookmarking but a lot can be done at once with this tool. They’ve gone through various upgrades in response to changes made by the sites that this tool submits to. It is a one-time fee to purchase and can be a very useful way of getting that type of backlink.
OnlyWire - Submit urls to this place and in turn, they submit to several bookmarking sites on your behalf. There’s a plugin that submits to Onlywire for you, too, but I think Onlywire has some issues getting their submissions accepted (unfounded rumor on my end though… just a feeling)
Stumbleupon Traffic Exchanges- there’s even Stumbleupon Traffic Exchanges where people are spending time “Stumble-ing” others’ urls.
NING - There’s places like NING where you can set up social bookmarking groups. NING is a decent service to use because you’ll be joining groups and finding people who have similar sites and interests and exchanging social bookmarks with them.
