Link building tips for newbies

If you’re a first-time visitor to this site (linkvanareviews.com) then you might be overwhelmed with some of the different levels of link building tips and SEO articles on here, so I thought I’d get back to basics with some link building tips for newbies.

And even for you advanced SEO-ers and readers, it’s still always good to revisit link building fundamentals.

What are links and backlinks?

Consider them votes by other sites and virtual web properties that vote you up in the search engines’ eyes.  Generally speaking, the more links you get, the better.  However, there’s always more value given to quality backlinks over lower-quality backlinks, and a few quality backlinks could do as much for you as 2000 low-quality spam links like hreferrer spam links.

What types of links are there?

Basically, there are 2 types of links, Naked links and Anchor Text links

Naked links look just like regular URLs, like this >http://hubpages.com/hub/Link-Building-For-Newbies

Anchor text links have words or keywords made into clickable links so if I were to point a backlink to a site with the words link building tips in there, I’d send them to my Link building tips hub to get more info about getting backlinks

How do backlinks bring you traffic?

The more votes/backlinks you get, the higher your rankings should be for certain keywords and phrases you optimized a site or pages for.  So if/when you start acquiring backlinks to increase your search engine rankings, you’ll start to see what is known as organic traffic from the search engines.  Ogranic traffic is free traffic being sent to your site by the search engines because they ranked your site or pages for certain keywords that were searched for.

Another way links can bring traffic outside of achieving ranking sis if you have a naked link in published articles somewhere and people are clicking on the links and coming to your site.  This type of direct-traffic-from-links is seen most often with article marketing when authors leave links that are naked, or merely say, “click here”…

Are backlinks all that’s needed to get good rankings and organic traffic?

It must be stressed that backlinks and link building will not do everything for you since you still need to factor in the on-page optimization factors for ranking properly.  Many times I’ve hammered certain urls with backlinks only to remain steadily in a less-than-desired ranking, but when I revisited the on-page optimization factors for those particular urls and made some improvements, I saw almost-immediate improvements in the SERPs.

Therefore, SEO can be dumbed-down to having a happy marriage between on-page and off-page optimization factors; so send quality links to a well-optimized site or page and you’ll rank well, every time (or over time, eventually!)

Note to the advanced peeps: putting url of site in first few sentences of your content gets that url put onto other sites when you have rss site feed scrapers scraping your first sentence or three and re-posting it elsewhere, as does Yoast’s RSS Footer plugin.
