Link building – when should you start?

Here’s something I’ve been doing lately that may help you do more effective link building:

Let’s say you wrote a blog post or site article and you’re waiting for it to get indexed…

Give it at least a week to see where it settles in the SERPS.

After you publish new content to your site, it will take a while for it to get indexed, depending on the spidering frequency taking place on/to your site.

This blog post I am writing right now will be indexed in 15 minutes due to the frequency of my posting here, my ping list that I’m giving away at my traffic tips newsletter, and all the OFF-site activity that’s going on (ie. links coming in).

To be a time-conscious and effective link builder for your sites, do the bare minimum required to get your sites’ pages and posts to page 1.

Here’s how I recommend you do that:

Write your post, wait for it to get indexed, then wait a while longer to see where it’s REALLY going to end up, without any link building efforts.

For example, I wrote a blog post about Unique Article Wizard here, and it was page 9 when it got indexed, then started moving slowly up the rankings ladder.

It eventually “settled” on page 5 after a week or two and wasn’t moving much up or down.

When I saw that the other sites outranking my post (without links) were using similar but not 100% optimized for the terms I was going after by using words in their titles like “Instant Article Wizard, I knew that those sites weren’t more relevant than my post, and they weren’t on-page optimized for the term I was going after (unique article wizard review).

Therefore, I knew (and now you know, too…) that those sites that were ranking higher than me in the search engines weren’t going to be out-ranking me for long because they weren’t as relevant as my post was.

After all, the search engines are smart enough to know that a post about INSTANT article wizard isn’t as relevant as a post and post title that says UNIQUE article wizard therefore, my post will climb up in the SERPS until it reached its “settling point”.

The settling point I’m referring to is where your site will rank if you don’t do any further work like link building to get those posts or pages ranked higher.

This is important…. but why is this important and how will it make you a more effective link builder?

Because once you know where your content ranks “naturally” without any link building help, then you know how much effort you’ll need to get it ranked better.

You may find that your site gets to page one without any help needed whatsoever, and if that’s the case then move on to other things you want to rank well for.

The Unique Article Wizard Review post I mentioned earlier settled at page 5 because of decent competition for those terms and also because of the fact that many people had also written blog posts about instant article wizard, with the word “review” in there, and frequently mentioned the word “unique” in their content.

So that’s why there were sites with LESS relevant titles out ranking me, their content had the keywords in there that I was going after, too, so it made sense that they were outranking me, but not for long, eh?

As part of my test of the article marketing syndication service called My Article Network, I wrote a few articles and submitted them there to see what effects the links had on my ranking for the unique article wizard post on this site.

At the time of this writing, that post is page 2 for the term “Unique Article Wizard Review” due to the anchor text backlinks generated from my syndicated articles published to My Article Network.

HOWEVER, as a I look at the sites that are still outranking me, I still see some sites that should be outranking me because there are about 4 or 5 urls that outrank my post that are NOT about Unique Article Wizard (UAW)…

THEREFORE, I’m not impressed by the link juice of the “article sites” in the My Article Network (MAN) network that linking to my UAW post.

Not yet anyways…

Anyways, before I start sounding overly promotional about Backlink Solutions, let’s get back on point here.

To do effective link building, do the bare minimum necessary to get yourself onto page 1 for your chosen keywords.

If you don’t let your site posts or pages reach a “settling point” prior to getting links to your pages, you won’t be able to tell how well your site does without getting backlinks to those individual urls, and you won’t have a good handle on how effective your link building service is working for you.

You might be thinking that, “hey Page 2 isn’t too bad for 2 article submitted to My Article Network, but the fact of the matter is, I like to factor in the time involved to get those articles written, rewritten (spun) then submitted to their network, and also how long it takes to get ranked well, and how long it takes to see movement in the SERPS.

So yes, Page 2 is good for 2 articles written and submitted to MAN’s $47.00/month service, but I also know that Backlink Solutions could have done better for me in less time and I’ve proven that time and time again.

You want to get links to your site only when yo uknow how much work is needed to achieve your desired rankings, which is why I stress that you need to ascertain the settling point prior to building backlinks.

If you put this method into practice you’ll spend a lot less time link building and you’ll do really well for yourself since you’ll be doing only what’s necessary to get sites ranked highly.
