Linkwheels results from the link wheels experiment
This should be the final post in this series on link wheels.
It appears that the linkwheel I outsourced has been done for 2 weeks now. I missed the email sent to me with the account and url details, and since I didn’t see any real changes in the SERPs, I assumed the project was still pending.
The linkwheel project:
Immediate Objective:
To create a network/webring of content/site accounts/web 2.0 profiles to link inwardly and to each other for a certain keyword term/phrase.
Long-term Objective:
To get a certain domain name (uniquearticlewizardreview.org) ranked for the term “Unique Article Wizard” and “unique article wizard review”.
Naturally, you’d think that the domain name itself would get the site ranked well since the keywords ARE IN the domain name.
Prior to outsourcing the linkwheel I did nothing for this site for on-page SEO or off-site linking and just had some content added to it periodically.
Linkwheel diagram
Here’s a diagram of what my linkwheel for this project looked like and how most link wheels are set up:

LinkWheel Diagram for Unique Article Wizard
Results?
The results weren’t anything to write home about since I saw no betterment of SERPs for that site for those terms.
None of the outer ring of account profiles or web 2.0 sites rank well for the terms, as expected. I wrote about this in Link wheels best practices so I wasn’t really surprised to NOT see those outer ring of sites showing up for the desired search terms.
However, the goal isn’t really to get those sites ranked well, but if these links in the outer ring were powerful they’d be lending link juice towards each other or rather, passing them along to help each other out in the ranking department.
And supposedly, these sites, once they’re ranking well, will provide super-powerful inbound links pointing towards the main site, the one in the middle of the circle.
Well, if those outer webrings aren’t ranking well, then the linkjuice is minimal at best, and the time involved in creating these linkwheels doesn’t seem worth it, or even worth outsourcing.
To get the outer sites ranked better you’d need to add more unique content to them and send some 3d party links their way, which basically means you’re spreading yourself thing by having to create more content and spend more time linkbuilding.
NOTE:
As mentioned in the Link wheels best practices post this method is more suitable for low-to-medium competition terms.
So I’m not saying it won’t work for you, but it seems best suited for easily dominated terms.
If you want to dominate long tail terms easily, there are faster and easier ways to accomplish that.
I got tired of waiting for my desired SERPS to appear so I just plugged in some snippets to BLS and am now watching daily positions rising for those terms.

Aye, that confirms my suspicions that linkwheels aren’t as good as they made out to be.
Though, 2 weeks I think is a little short to be absolutely sure, I would have waited mb a month first.
Yeah, well the linkwheel was done 3 weeks ago apprarently and that’s plenty of time to see the results. However, this is just one test for one site and a couple of keywords being targeted.
Normally my testing is a lot more scientific and involved but I was impatient and just wanted to finish the project.
Looks like your site is #6 for “unique article wizard” and #5 & 6 for “unique article wizard review” on Google Canada!
Right, that started rising once I threw some BLS links at it and the other site (uniquearticlewizardreview.net)
So based on this, if you had to choose between a LinkWheel or BLS, you would just choose BLS to increase rankings? I would strongly suggest that you read the report over at linkwheels.com It’s a 17 pager but the creator makes his wheels much more intense in a way that won’t implicate the main money site. Definitely requires a bit more work so it’s something worth trying…
I recommend saving a lot of time yet achieving same results using a good link building service. Linkwheels need to be built up to a certain degree, like a lens or hub page…takes time.
Why not focus on one piecebof real estate…your own… andbget as many links to that as possible instea dof building lnkwheels?
All those links add to overall linkjuice of blog and is the gift that keeps on giving, whilsts still achieving same results
Linkwheels have lost their shine.
It used to work well, but Google got smart and have started slapping linkwheels.
Maybe that explains your dismal SERPS performance.
Puppet Master´s last blog ..“Jay Abraham is here to see you…”
I’ve seen no indication that Google has slapped link wheels.
The dismal SERPs was a result of NON promotion of the outer spokes of the link wheel. This was just a test to see if link wheels set up by itself did what “everyone” claimed they would do, or is more was needed.
And more is needed indeed.
The site indicated in my test is now #3 or 4 for my chosen term but I accomplished that by article marketing backlinks, not promotion of linkwheels spokes.
Do you have some proof of G slapping link wheels? I’d like to read up on it a bit to remain current.
Thanks,
Dan
Your SERPS performance or lack of, is because you did not promote the spokes. Google does not penalize for a linkwheel and they still remain a solid form of SEM.
Actually, the wheel was built to promote itself, by having some spokes linking to each other. It just needed more content and more self-promotion to work.
All I had to do to get my site ranked though was write one article/snippet and syndicate it, and/or get 50-60 backlinks to my destination URL, which took less time to build than creating 5-6 sites that needed more than 1 article and more than 50-60 backlinks total to work well
Dan,
thanks for all your reviews. open linkwheels are better. I wouldn’t connect them in a complete circle. leave it open at one end so it doesnt completely wrap around.
Vinnie
Hey Vinnie, thanks for chiming in here…
Open ended link wheels are safer and longer-lasting, and less footprint-able.
And they require some human intervention, at least when interlinking is concerned.
Thanks,
Dan
Hi Dan,
I saw the linkwheel picture at this post. Please don’t connect the your 1st web 2.0 to the last wheel, as Google can detect the wheel. I always cut the connection from my #1 blog with the last blog.
You can connect the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 blog but don’t connect again from 7 to 1.
Thank you,
Steven

Hi Steve, thanks but this was the link wheel I ordered and not my own design.
Back when I ordered this people were closing out their link wheels, but nowadays people know better and are leaving certain spokes in the wheel open
