LinkWheels – What are LinkWheels and do they work?

in Link wheels

There’s a new term out these days called LinkWheels and it’s something I’ve been doing on a very limited basis the past few months.

What is/are Linkwheels?

It is the tying together, or connectivity involved in having links from web 2.0 properties pointing towards your main sites.

This is nothing new, but it will gain in popularity once people grab onto this “new SEO trick” as something new that gives them an upper hand, SEO-wise…

Here’s how I have used it with just 2 Web 2.0 properties, Squidoo and Hub Pages:

When you set up a Hub or Lens, you have the option of publishing RSS feeds from your blogs or wherever you have an RSS feed published.

So when you create a lens or hub, your most recent posts on your main sites are getting linked to when you publish the lens if the lens o rhub has an RSS feed being published there.

As you may/may not know, RSS feeds pull your content titles and sometimes even an excerpt from the latest posts displayed on your RSS feeds.

If you have a lens set up, you will get a backlink from your lens every time you post something new to your blog since it gets updated in your RSS feed.

Does this work?

It sure does, and SEOs like Kurt from the dombom forum have been espousing the benefits of this for a long, long time, and it is part of what the folks at SE Nuke are doing.

Update: I outsourced a fully-fleshed-out Platinum with the folks at maxdesk and you can read about it at Testing Out Link Wheels

Quick note: SE Nuke is NOT recommended by me since I didn’t have much luck using it, but theoretically, it has everything you need for widespread link generation. You can give SE nuke a test drive for free by going here.

Why does Linkwheeling and using Web 2.0 properties for link building work?

Because it gives you the ability to harness the power of authority sites like Squidoo and HubPages much like you would harness the power of submitting articles to article directories like EzineArticles.com.

Since there are literally thousands of Web 2.0 properties you can build, that means that using web 2.0 properties for link building purposes is a great way to create a network of sites that are linking to you.

And since these Web 2.0 properties are all on different IP addresses and subnets, the search engines will see you getting links form a wide range and style of sites, and this is a good link building and good SEO practice.

However, building Web 2.0 properties can be time consuming to say the very least, and getting your Hubs and Lenses to rank well requires some involvements with those communities in order to get them ranking well on their own.

If your goal is to get backlinks and NOT to have your Web 2.0 stuff to rank well, then this is a good solution to pursue, although you should always remember that you don’t OWN these sites you created, they’re not on your domain, platform or hosting, and your accounts can get banned at any time.

That’s part of the reason why I use web 2.0 sites sparingly…

I want to own and control what happens to my business, but it is really just a control issue with me. You’d have to do something really outlandish to get your sites banned, and it’s not like Google Adsense where getting kicked out is almost a “forever” permanent thing.

If this is something you’re interested in doing, then you have at your disposal the ability to create a HUGE network of sites linking to your main sites.

Web 2.0 linking seems to be a more important factor in link building these days, especially with the dearth of blog networks out there now, and again, Linkwheels allows you to create one-way inbound links to your main sites for free.

The problem with this method, if there is one, is how much content you’re going to have to create and publish in order to maintain a whole bunch of sites.

With a service like SE Nuke, content creation is NOT an issue due to their advanced back-end software, and their ability to create hundreds of Web 2.0 site accounts and sites with click-button ease.

I’m not pushing SE nuke on you because I tried it for a while and ran into multiple technical issues, but if you can work through those issues, then their price tag of $127.00/month is well worth it because that’s a content generation, traffic generation and link building service all rolled into one.

Frankly, I wouldn’t use it if it were free because of the time it took me to get used to using it, but here’s a link (aff link) to SE nuke here.

I’m suggesting you try it out via my aff link so you hopefully come back here with some feedback on how it worked for you. It’s free to try for 30 days, which is plenty of time to get used to their software.

Be careful!

*****  the following excerpt was taken without permission from http://www.milliondollarcommissions.com/blog/marketing/got-pwnd-by-hubpages/ so I’m linking to them twice so you know this excerpt came from there, and where you can go to read more about this particular tiopic:

BEGIN EXCERPT:

Boooooo. My linkwheeling had been funneling quite a nice amount of quite responsive traffic to my money page for the last 2 months. Then this morning i check my email and found that the keystone in the wheel had been “been flagged by our system as a violation of our Terms of Use.” Booo.

I’m guessing it was this particular section of the rules that it was violating.

* You must have no more than 1-2 links to any one domain on a page of original content (tinyurl and other cloakers are considered wildcards).  Note that this means that you may not have any promotional links on hubs that appear elsewhere on the internet.

PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 3 In a nutshell Basically, a linkwheel is a set of SIX Web 2.0 properties interlinked in a “wheel” structure, all promoting a page on the web which is the focus of that particular “wheel”. Let me explain, or well, let this image show you. Hope it makes sense. Basically, you have six properties up, and each contains a link to the “focus hub” AND its ‘neighbor’ as you can see in the image above, the arrows representing links. Expanding Your “focus hub” could be ANY page you wish to promote. For example a page on your website, or another Web 2.0 property. To expand, you could build a linkwheel like this around a page, and then build a new linkwheel around each of the properties that are in that linkwheel. For example, in the above image, you would continue building another linkwheel having Weebly and Squidoo etc AS the Focus Hub. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 4 Make sense? You could take this idea and apply it to so many different things I’m not even going to bother with covering more scenarios. Use your imagination! Taking Over the G Use of the Linkwheel strategy can bring some serious Google domination implications. For keywords with lower competition you could easily take over the front page of Google. Further Promotion of the Wheel Alright, so while what I’ve explained could bring some great results, this will take it to another level with minimum extra work. RSS Awesomeness Okay, so EACH of the web 2.0 properties you publish your content to will also give you an RSS feed. If you can’t find it, on the top of your browser by the URL address bar thingy you will see a little RSS icon glowing if the browser can find an RSS feed on that particular page. This is what it looks like in my version of Firefox 3 (I’m on a mac) The little blue icon there is the RSS icon. Just click it if you can’t find the feed manually. The icon could be orange too. After you’ve gotten the RSS url, just go to http://pingomatic.com or http://pingler.com to ping it. Social Bookmarking Unless you have access to an automated social bookmarking tool, don’t even bother with bookmarking here. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 5 If you do, awesome. Personally I use another tool of Howie’s, Bookmark Generation. The reason why is because it automates Account creation on all the social bookmarking sites, plus that it puts the actual bookmarking on autopilot as well, and it can bookmarks your stuff across dozens of accounts at scheduled times. Like, you can tell it to “Bookmark these six URLs 5 times every 10 hours”. I love it, but it’s just my personal preference. There’s also Bookmarking Demon which is good too. If you’re on a budget, the best FREE bookmarking tool would have to be Onlywire. There’s also SocialMarker and SocialPoster which are free too. Basically what you do here is to just bookmark all the URLs in the Linkwheel. Simple as that. Web 2.0 Properties Alright, so those six above are just a few of the different places you can post your content to. Basically – you want to post your content to ANY site where you can, which does NOT make your outgoing links nofollow. Some of the popular sites, such as Zimbio for example, puts a “nofollow” tag on the links you put there, which pretty much makes the link near useless in terms of ranking benefits. You can check if links are “nofollow” with Aaron Wall’s SEO For Firefox plugin, for the Firefox browser. Here: http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/seo-for-firefox.html And it’s free! Anyway, here you’ll find a list of some of the other Web 2.0 Properties you can and should use. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 6 Web 2.0 sites: http://squidoo.com http://wordpress.com http://livejournal.com http://blog.com http://blog.co.uk http://jimdo.com http://blogger.com http://weebly.com http://blinkweb.com http://blogsome.com http://blogvis.com http://yola.com http://iblog.my http://vox.com http://rateitall.com http://clearblogs.com http://easyjournal.com http://blogetery.com Again, those are just a handful for you to start off with. I’m not gonna give you specific instructions for each one of them, so play around a bit… and if there’s an option to create a “website” or a “blog” – always choose a blog because you get an RSS feed that way, which you can ping and add to directories. WordPress MU So… to get even further ahead of the competition… There are THOUSANDS of sites running WordPress MU. MU stands for multi-user… meaning each user can set up their own blog. The most famous WP MU blog site would of course be WordPress.com, and from the list above, Blogsome is also running WordPress MU. But there are literally THOUSANDS of smaller ones. Have a look here: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22wp-signup.php%22 Yah, that’s more than 21K results. Go crazy. Just make sure they’re dofollow. So for each linkwheel, just pick six properties and go! © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 7 SubWheels Something else you can do to achieve total Google domination is to build SubWheels… This image explains it: Here’s another example to get your creative juices flowing a bit: http://bubbl.us/view.php? sid=281085&pw=yackMkZEGBam.Nzlod29GYTNPdnJLYw Working Backwards to Save Time This was a mistake I made when I first started doing this. Let’s bring up that image again. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 8 Okay, so we pick a starting point, let’s say we start by posting to Quizilla. Logically, once we’re done posting our content there, the next place to post content would be Blogsome, right? Right, except that would take more time. As Quizilla is linking TO Blogsome, when you’re making the post at Quizilla you don’t have anywhere to link to other than the Focus Hub! Therefore, once we’ve posted to Quizilla, we move on to Blogger. When doing the post at Blogger, the Quizilla post already exists so we link to that, and of course to the focus hub again. And then, you just make your way around the wheel until you get to Blogsome. When you’re done with them all, you just go back into the Quizilla post and add the link to Blogsome. A simple mistake, but it’s easy to make if you’re not watching what you’re doing. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 9 Misc. notes Content What do you use for content on these linkwheels? I get that a lot. Personally, I make an article and submit it to Unique Article Wizard and just take the content from there. I can view my article, and each time I refresh the page and it gives me a unique version. Thing is, it’s not really unique, and its uniqueness varies a LOT from article to article. If you don’t have UAW and don’t plan on investing in it, I would just use duplicate content. Of course, the BEST way to do it is to use unique content everywhere, but I’m too lazy for that, but if you have the resources then by all means use unique content… If I did NOT have my dear UAW subscription (which is $67 a month by the way) – this is what I would do: I would write one article per linkwheel. Simple. So one piece of content optimized for a keyword goes on six properties. Now it’s important that the ‘focus hub’ of this linkwheel does NOT have this same piece of content. Then each property in your linkwheel would link to two places, each containing the EXACT same content. How do you think Google will see that? Keywords So what keywords do you target in your LWs? I get that a lot too. You target one keyword per linkwheel. As the article is optimized for a keyword, the whole wheel will be, so make your titles and tags optimized accordingly. One Keyword per linkwheel. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 10 Blogs On Blogger.com and all the other free blogs you post to… with each new linkwheel, it’s important to make a NEW blog entirely, as opposed to just making a new post on your existing blogs. You’ll pretty much never have a blog with more than a single post. Often, on sites such as Livejournal and Blogsome for example, you need to create new accounts for each new blog. Which brings us to… Accounts You’ll eventually have tons of different accounts on all of these different sites, and you might want to organize all the login info somewhere. As for the accounts themselves, stay NICHED within the accounts. For example, within one squidoo account, don’t stray outside of the niche you’re in. Like, you don’t want to have “gardening” lenses grouped together with “make money online” lenses in the same account. It’s all about that relevance, you know. 100% relevance, always. Remember that. Keywords When creating new accounts and new properties, you want to use your keyword whenever you can throughout the process. On Livejournal, Blogsome and Jimdo for example, the URL you get will contain the USERNAME you signed up with, so use your keyword there. For example when you post to squidoo, you want it to look like squidoo.com/yourkeyword or on blogsome: yourkeyword.blogsome.com © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 11 Get it? Moving on… Account Creation To make life a bit easier for you, here’s a little trick to speed up account creation. Create a disposable gmail account… you don’t want to mix up your normal email with all of the emails you’ll be getting from the sites you sign up to, as you’ll be signing up to like, several a day. So anyway, when you have your new email address, let’s say it’s bobawesome@gmail.com Okay? Now, you can just add in periods in the email and it will go to the same place anyway. For example with the above email address, if you email bob.awesome@gmail.com or.. b.obawe.some@gmail.com …they will STILL end up in the same inbox. Try it, send an email to yourself first to make sure it works. The thing is, the web 2.0 sites you’ll be signing up to will treat all of these as different emails and they’ll still go to the same inbox. This way you don’t have to create tons of new emails when you need new accounts. Notes on Quizilla So, quizilla, can be somewhat tricky. When you make a post there, go to “Stories → Create New” and make your post there. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 12 When creating links, you have to use HTML code, which looks like this: ANCHOR TEXT The RSS feed… you don’t get a new one for each new post. So, go to “My Stuff → Stuff I Made” and below the box where they show all your stuff there’s a tiny RSS icon. Right click that, and hit “Copy Link Location”. And that’s your RSS Feed URL. Also, you don’t need to run it through Howie’s Pinger more than once per Quizilla account, because the URL won’t change, and you don’t need to add it more than once to the RSS directories. So just ping the feed using PingOMatic or Pingler or whatever pinging tool you prefer. Notes on Squidoo Okay, so when posting to Squidoo, if you don’t post enough content, your lens will be a “work in progress” lens, or WIP lens. This in turn means that the links going out from it will be nofollowed, which kind of defeats the whole purpose here… So to avoid this, Squidoo tells us we need at least 3 content modules. So what I do is to add a small teaser in the intro module (this doesn’t count as a module) along with a link to my money page, where I WANT them to click. Then I make 2 text modules, take my article, split it in half and post half to each module. Finally I take a Link module and squeeze © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 13 it in between them and add the appropriate links. So that’s 3 modules, and your lens will instantly ‘go green’. Make sure you optimize your tags and keywords for the lens too, use http://squidootagbuddy.info to save some time. Notes on Weebly Don’t really like Weebly, and they don’t seem to like me either. BUT, they are in fact PR 7 and they do bring some nice Google lovin’ so they are definitely worth using. A few notes though: First of all, and this is kind of interesting… In the box where you can sign up on the front page, this one: You can actually enter whatever bogus information you want. It doesn’t even have to be a real email address, because they will let you create your site without confirming your account… And also you can only create 2 sites per account. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 14 And now for the more important point: After you have created the site and gotten into the site editor to add in your content and links, navigate to the Pages tab on the top left. Click the ‘New Blog’ button. Create a new blog that way, make sure you name it after your keyword. Now click the big SAVE button Now, Weebly will take you back to the Elements tab, but we’re not done yet. So, navigate back to the PAGES tab and go to the old ‘home’ page, as shown on the next page. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 15 Just click the delete button. We don’t need this page, just the blog. Now go back to the elements tab and add your content to your new blog! Why did we make a blog instead? Because, this way we get an RSS feed, which we wouldn’t have otherwise. It’ll look like this: http://yourkeyword.weebly.com/1/feed That’s it on Weebly. Notes on Yola This used to be SynthaSite… don’t ask me why they changed names, they were a PR 6 and everything… Anyway, when you’re asked to choose between a Website and a Blog when you’re making your site here, choose blog so you get a feed… © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 16 Notes on Clearblogs Go into Settings and then the ‘Site Feed’ tab, and choose YES on the “publish site feed” menu. There, now you have another RSS feed to ping. © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved. PROJECT ONE HUNDRED|LINKWHEEL Page 17 Conclusion Well, that’s it! May sound complicated, but it’s simple once you’ve gotten the hang of it. How long does this take? For me, from start to finish (including pinging+bookmarking) it usually takes me 25-35 minutes, depending on which properties I post to. For an example of a complete traffic strategy involving the LinkWheel, check out this post on my blog: http://lemonarian.com/easy-traffic-the-lemonarian-way Also, if you have any questions… read the FAQ. http://lemonarian.com/the-linkwheel-faq And yeah, that’s it. Good luck with this stuff, your imagination really is the only thing that’s stopping you :) Stay awesome, Linus “lemonarian” Rylander http://lemonarian.com © Lemonarian Dot Com, All Rights Reserved.

Hey Daniel, I actually came here from google looking to see if web2mayem was full of it, I am glad you ranked for this , it is so strange to see real reviews ,except for that “…is a scam” guy who ironically is the scam!
I have tried the link wheel, an up and coming gooroo (as benwell would say) swore it worked on the senuke forum and yes it allows all your properties to be found ….and then taken down enough to be linking nowhere, and again , and again. I even tried using just image links but that was found out too. Really pointless.
Anyway thanks for the info, keep up the good work!

P.s. By the way I bought the latest from rob benwell, got a refund though, it was only meant to be 300 members but on affx site it said they had sold 7000 copies! Wow 7000 people all chasing the same tactic…I’d better sell some of my high PR domains to them (if you know the strategy you will know what I mean!)

Hey Louis, the more you understand SEO the more you realize it’s all about effective link building that begets a good ROI. Once this stuff is learned and learned well, then maybe it’s time to learn about how to do media buys…

Learn SEO link building and paid media buys, and you pretty much got traffic generation nailed, and no need for guru ebooks geared towards noobs
