Something some people don’t realize about their websites is that their market research and their keyword research were wrong from the get-go, and that they might be going after the wrong keywords with their sites.
Sometimes a web”master” will go after hard to rank for generic keywords versus low competition, highly profitable money keywords and search terms, and that’s the gist of this article…
So let’s say you picked a niche, you think you know your keywords, their organic search volume, the main and sub keywords, their CPC, EPC, and after all that data is in your hands, you’ve decided you want to rank for the highest traffic generating, highest search volume terms…
…but do you really want to rank for the highest volume keywords?
Maybe yes, maybe not…
Sometimes high volume equals generic traffic when compared to buying keywords search volume. Generic traffic tends to convert at a lower percentage than the money terms so there’s a toss up here, do you want delayed gratification and wait months to rank a generic high comp. term or go after the low hanging fruit and rank within weeks for better converting terms?
Smarter link building starts with smarter keyword research (I can hear the yawns now).
A simple “trick” to establishing good ROI with site building and link building is to know what your profitable keywords are…
- what are the real buying keywords?
- what are the “solve this problem for me” long tail phrases?
- what’s getting high CPC or EPC or whatever?
- what can I rank for sooner rather than later?
Short version- Send PPC traffic to a website of yours selling something directly and see which keywords convert the best. You will get accurate search volume numbers and will be able to assess whether this volume is going to provide an acceptable income for your business/websites.
Long version-(somewhat simplified)
Step 1- You have a niche picked out, and a list of keywords (high volume low volume, related, long tail, short tail etc…)
Step 2- Set up landing pages for each keyword, or even dedicated websites
Step 3- Set up PPC campaigns for these keywords to ascertain which type-in searches convert best (you see this on your analytics stats or just in bottom line sales, or clicks, or even newsletter opt-ins).
THEN… once you know what your profitable keywords are, then assess the competition…. which of these are rank-achievable and when
….Then what?
Buy domains for these keywords, set up EMD’s based on these terms
or just optimize, or re-optimize, then rank your websites for these terms if achievable sooner rather than later.
Once this ROI pans out for you, then you can invest more energies into the more generic terms with higher volume traffic…
MORE…
Even if you set up a PPC ad that doesn’t encourage clicks because you’re not a good PPC ad writer, you will still get an accurate representation of the search volume for these keywords, because the number of ad impressions does in fact equal the number of searches…
So even if you’re not into testing conversions and don’t want to write ads, you can still use PPC campaigns to accurately gauge the search volume.
However, I’m not encouraging you to set up paid campaigns just to see what the true search volume is. If you’re going to go to the effort of writing ads and paying for potential clicks, you might as well focus on your back-end (conversions) as well… you’ll be better off if you don’t half-a** this and just follow the method all the way through.
I don’t teach keyword research and market research here and don’t intend to….
However, smarter link building does start at the very beginning, with good research, and it’s easily done

I have a real estate site and can tell you that this is dead on. I rank nr 1 for all the generic terms (which is great and is what everyone else is spending all their money trying to dominate…) BUT, I actively target the long tail “condos for sale on xxxxxxxxxx” “condos for sale in xxxxx Park” etc.
These searches are by people who have already made up their mind, they have done all the hard work for me and now want to see what the best deal is on the development/complex they have chosen – conversions on these leads is far higher than those on generic search inquiries where someone wants to get to know an area first and is picking out listings at random.
This methodology applies equally to real estate (very high commission per conversion) and to niche sites (with adsense) and makes perfect sense – especially when you have seen it in action.
Andy, thanks for stopping by, and for providing a real-life example of some terms for this method. As you probably know it’s not a new nor unique method and it’s part of how one would own all the traffic for niche keywords, generic and otherwise
Dan
Andy is spot on, I help out a company in Thailand for a bit of fun and the number of Real Estate sites that are spending HUGE money on generic terms is amazing. I’ve been more than happy to let our natural rankings slip off page 1 on these and concentrate on specific developments, not only more inquiries but the quality is up as well.
Sometimes it’s nice to see those thousands of visitors a day (from a smugness point of view) that generic terms can easily bring but when it comes to cashing in I don’t think there’s any competition.
I was very lucky to be able to rank one of my sites for the ultra competitive and supposedly amazing keywords “lose weight” and “lose weight fast” to #1 in Google US as well as Google UK. (A dream which i thought would never be possible…but i managed to do it).
The surprise was that this keyword is so generic and despite loads of traffic..the visitors coming from “lose weight” hardly buy anything and had a VERY high bounce rate. This is a keyword which had hardly any real value.
While the traffic on the site was about 30% from the keyword “lose weight” (highest percentage of visitors per keyword)….the majority of the traffic (the remaining 70%!) came from many thousands other long tail keywords. The visitors from those long tail keywords stay significantly longer on the site, far better traffic quality.
I cannot over-emphasize that on almost all sites the majority of overall traffic will NOT come from your “main keyword”, even if you heavily optimize your site for one or two keywords. Usually, your main keyword will draw “only” 20% or 30%. And how do you get all those long tail keywords which can make 65% and more of your overall site traffic? Easy! With good and quality content. The more and the better content, the more chances you will have to rank for all those thousands of long tail keywords.
This is something every webmaster and SEO really needs to realize.
George, you have a good site, been watching and reading your stuff. And yes, so true, crush the serps for long tails as those are plentiful and can add up to more than the main kws ranking well. Just write a lot of content make it useful and you get found for stuff you never could have researched and anticipated ahead of time.
Thanks for chiming in, honored to have you commenting on here thanks.

Just wanted to drop a quick thank you for this very interesting website…
and: any ideas about German services like BMR?
Thx
Dan
Dan, sorry I haven’t checked on this.
To quote Gandhi here for a sec, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.
If there’s a lack of services for German links, then make a German DMOZ or make German niche directories.
Start a forum in your niche, or hit the webmaster forums, maybe do the old reciprocal linking thing.
Stuff like that, hope this helps a bit, I will still ask around since I dropped the ball on getting an answer to your question.
Thanks,
Dan
