What to do if your link building service isn’t working for you

Any link building service you use should be providing some sort of benefit to you, seriously.

There are some link building services that I deem ineffective, but only when compared to more effective link building services.

Link building is an investment therefore nothing really gets wasted.  Getting backlinks for your site is like building a house, the better your backlinks, the stronger your house will be.

Remember the story of the 3 Little Pigs?

The house made of brick and stone and not straw will survive, and it’s also where “everyone” ended up

And it also beat the similar competition (the 2 other pigs) and the Big Bad Wolf,  ooowwwwwwwwwwww!

Anyways, enough about why link building is needed, you want to know…

What to do if your link building service isn’t working for you, right?

O.K. Let’s take it from the top here…questions to ask

1 – What are you getting backlinks TO…?

2- What are you getting backlinks FOR…?

3- What kind of back links are you getting?

4- Is your site helping the cause?

1 – What are you getting backlinks TO…?

Getting links to just your main page (domain name url ) creates a top-heavy site, links-wise and “SEO weight” isn’t lent to your inner pages when there’s no links to other pages on your site.

To create a site that gets a lot of traffic, you want links to all pages on your site, which many people do not do.

It’s similar to going to the gym and never doing leg workouts because everyone hats doing legs, but that’s basically ignoring half your body in your work out..

So when using a link building service, get links to various pages on your site.  I’m sure you have some product reviews or “money pages” on your site to get links to them, and optimze the pages/posts for long-tail and “short-tail to see quick results.

2- What are you getting backlinks FOR…?

Now that we know that you need more that just links to the main domain name url… the next consideration is what your backlinks are like…

What is your anchor text?

3 things to take into consideration when getting anchor-text-based back links

  • Variety
  • Long-tail
  • Short-tail

Variety:

As mentioned previously in section 1, you don’t want to be too top-heavy with link acquisition by getting links to just your main domain name, and this philosophy of link variance applies to your anchor text as well.

You need to mix it up for your anchor text, as it is deemed “unnatural” to get 250 backlinks for just one term (keyword or keyphrase).

It should be obvious by now that you want backlinks with descriptive anchor text in there, but in case that poin twas overlooked, let me just reiterate… you want backlinks that have anchor text behind them to help the search engines know what your site is about.

Long-tail:

Going after long-tail keywords for ranking well and for testing out your link building service is a great strategy.  However, even some long-tail keywords still have stiff competition, so long-tail in my opinion really just means a long keyphrase with less competition, but not necessarily with ZERO competition.

The reason you want to optimize pages for long tail keywords and to use long-tail keywords in the anchor text back to those pages is because this is the easiest way to rank well.

And this is the easiest way to determine if your link building service is working well for you, if at all.

3- Short-tail

As mentioned in part 2 above, you want to optimize web pages and posts for long tail keywords and phrases whilsts getting backlinks for the same (long-tail anchor links)

Now, while this may not seem evident to the new wanna-be link building webmaster, let me say this…

ANY post or page you create specifically for long-tail keywords and/or phrases will also have the short-tail, harder-to-rank-well-for terms in that phrase as well.

THIS… is the beauty to getting a variety of anchor text links back to your site because you should be getting a variety on backlinks to your site not just to different urls but also using different anchor text links to describe the page it’s linking to.

So when you test out your link building service, focus on an inner page optimized for long-tail AND short-tail generic terms and get that mix of backlinks…

3- What kind of back links are you getting?

Here’s the variety of links you can get with a few types mixed in:

Reciprocal... – easy to get, can be automated, tons of services out there for this, not as effective for your site as other linking methods.

3-way links and X-way links- 3ways links like site A to B to C, and C eventually links back to A, whereas X-way linking casts a wider net, leaving les sof an easily identifiable footprint.

One-way links: (what you really want…)

  • Social bookmarking links,
  • Forum-links,
  • Blog comments
  • etc…

One issue I have with the NextGenLinks,3WayLinks, and NeuroLinker linkbuilding services is that you’re required to link out in order to get linked to.

Now, linking out is OK because ONCE AGAIN, you cannot be too top-heavy with your site structure or linking ratio (links in versus links out).

It’s good to link to other sites in your niche becaus eit shows your sit eis not an “island”…

However… the reason you want to get one way links instead of services that force you to link outwards is this…

You want incoming links to increase your sites’ linkjuice and rankings.

You want to pick and choose what sites you link out to, and yes…as mentioned before it is good to link to other sites, therefore you want to create some link-bait pieces on your site to even out your link distribution.

Also, it’s not even really necessary to create link-bait pieces when your site is linking out to whatever affiliate products you might be promoting anyways.

So look at it this way, do you want your link-building service telling you who you have to link out to, or would you rather dictate the pace at which you link out, and have control over what sites you’re linking to?

YES…you do…

If you’re going to use a 3way linking or x-way linking service, do that for starter sites, small sites or static sites with little to no competition.

If you have different sites than the ones described above, use a recommended one way link building service

4- Is your site helping the cause?

Your on-page optimization is crucial to the success, or lack thereof to your link building efforts, and attempts to rank well.  A poorly optimized site won’t be able to make good use of your link building service and could severely limit the effectiveness of links acquired.

On-page Optimization 101

1- Your domain name should have your main keywords in there, preferrably at the beginning of the name.  Get domain name suffixes (tld s) of .com, .net, and .org if you want to rank well.  Also, don’t discount the pluralization of your keywords as it will contain your main keywords in there anyhow.

2- Site title - don’t put your URL in here, just your main keywords, and don’t be afraid to modify this from time to time, but don’t change your on-page SEO too often.

3- Permalink settings for blogs - use %postname% for permalink settings and nothing else, as the other ones are less useful for SEO and other settings are conducive to creating duplicate content on your site by creating 4 different urls per post.

4- Post Title first? - You also want to configure your site to read post tile FIRST, followed by domain name, if at all.  Some SEOs configure their sites to display only the post titles and not followed by domain name KWs.

That’s OK, too but is more advanced tactic used by people who know exactly how to throw their SEO weight around on their sites by lending weight or linkjuice to certain words, and by knowing ahead of time what their goals are for the site (get top ranking for category KWs, post titles, overall site KWs etc…)

That’s the Basic SEO stuff you should be doing and I didn’t learn any of this from an ebook or website just trial and error, but there are people who can teach you this..

Best thing to do is to know how to analyze your SEO competition (upcoming post) to see how their sites are designed.  If they’re outranking you there may be on-page optimization reasons why they’re out-ranking you.

Finally… site structure…

Latent Semantic Indexing and Silo Site Structuring…

Fancy words eh? The best way to “do LSI” is to write naturally about your niche content, and I won’t go too much further into that, but you can read this article on Latent Semantic Indexing to find out more about this.

Silo Site Structuring has two key elements involving Dofollow and Nofollow attribute settings and determining where you want to lend your Page Rank down to ( A.K.A. lend SEO weight to).

I never really spent too much time with figuring this out or testing it, I just bought a plugin that made all these settings for me and have them on all my blogs now and they all do well.
